TENGEN GAMES is a new video game studio founded in 2024 by NES and Game Boy homebrew developer Jeff Silvers. Inspiration for the name will be obvious to retro gaming fans: the original Tengen Inc., founded in 1987, earned a reputation as mavericks who refused to work within unfair third-party licensing restrictions. Tengen Inc. went defunct in 1994, and for the next three decades, their famous unlicensed black cartridges influenced Jeff Silvers' belief that gaming has no gatekeeper.
On a whim, Silvers conducted some research in 2022 and discovered that nobody owned the Tengen name. Recognizing a unique chance to pay tribute to one of his formative influences, Silvers officially registered the "TENGEN" trademark in 2024.
Even with no official connection to the original company, the new TENGEN GAMES carries forward the spirit of uncompromising creative expression. Look forward to a slate of new titles for retro and current-gen consoles courtesy of TENGEN GAMES!
